Away day joy for Chippenham

By

Last away trip before the Christmas break proves successful for the Chippenham Chiefs.

On a cold, wet and windy Sunday morning, the young chiefs travelled down the M4 to play against Supermarine for a first visit to South Marston in quite some time. With a couple of players withdrawing due to illness and injuries it meant a slightly depleted squad for the bright eyed coaches to juggle with. On arrival it became clear that Supermarine were in need of a couple of players to field a full team and in true festive spirit Chippenham gifted the opposition two front row players. This left the coaches with only one sub to deal with. The game kicked off with the Chiefs gathering the restart and setting about their work. Some lovely rugby ensued with Chippenham going through multiple phases keeping hold of the ball and showing great continuity and support as they kept driving through the defence, with backs and forwards combining excellently the first try was on the cards. Jamie W soon obliged, running a fantastic line off of Will D, following quick ruck ball from the forwards. Not to be outdone by his centre partner Callum A grabbed a quick fire brace of tries to maintain his recent good try scoring form. Callum A showed great pace for his first, receiving the ball from Jamie, who had drawn the last defender, Callum showed his speed by blitzing into the corner. His second was a fine solo effort with Callum leaving defenders grasping at thin air with his outstanding footwork putting would be tacklers in a twist. The first half try scoring was completed by Ollie A who capitalised on some well worked pick and go from his fellow forwards, Ollie spotted a gap in the Supermarine ruck defence and burst through to dot down between the posts.
The second half did not start as well for the Chiefs, with the outstanding Supermarine fly half pulling the strings and the rangy 12 proving difficult to stop. Supermarine got a well deserved try from their inside centre who brushed off a couple of Chiefs tackles to burst through and score. This gave the home team some momentum and put the Chippenham defence under pressure, the young chiefs proved up to the challenge with some excellent tackling driving the opposition back regularly in contact. This defensive effort appeared to demoralise Supermarine and gave Chippenham back the initiative. Hugo P grabbed his first of the match with his trademark mazy running proving to much for Supermarine to stop. With the forwards scoring the last two tries for Chippenham, the backs were starting to feel left out. This was soon remedied when another strong scrum from Chippenham and good service from Fin D the ball was swept down the line with Joe H hitting an sublime line from full back to take the ball from Callum J and speed his way over the line. Hugo P rounded off the scoring for Chippenham taking a crash ball from a free pass to power over the line. The final score of the game went to the Supermarine fly half who supported his 12 to receive the offload and showed great pace to score in the corner.
A big thank you to Simon I, Alfie G, Liam S and Jack S for helping out the opposition in order for us to have a competitive game. One final push next week against Devizes in the final game for this round of the Dorset and Wiltshire cup. Rest up, I know I will, and see you all on Friday for our last training before the Christmas break.
