The Jon Conlan Memorial Trophy

By Robert Doyle

Local rivals, Newbridge and Cill Dara, will lock horns at 7.30 p.m. in Silken Thomas Park on Saturday October 21st for the Jon Conlan Memorial Trophy.

Jon Conlan died of cancer in January 2009, aged just 29. Jon’s roots were firmly in Cill Dara Rugby club – his grandfather being a founding member and his father and uncle players with the club – but after he left Newbridge College, he joined Newbridge RFC along with his school friends.

Soon after his tragic death, both clubs decided to commemorate Jon’s life by initiating an annual contest, the first of which was held in September 2009.

It promises to be an enthralling game. Newbridge are currently third in our league having won under lights last Friday at home to Mullingar. Cill Dara were unbeaten up to last Sunday but struggled in New Ross, losing badly. They currently lie three points behind their Rosetown rivals. Both clubs will have a point to prove.

This season's Jon Conlan Memorial Trophy promises to be a Saturday night cracker under lights.

The Senior Seconds League game between both clubs kicks off at the earlier time of 6:00 p.m.
