The game started slowly with neither side creating much but the Bears had most of the play. Winsford created the first opening with a shot on target but Peters deflected it for a corner. Then Dean Warburton tried to get John Main in but the ball was just too strong and ran out for a goal kick. Saul Henderson then headed wide and a dangerous Tom Stephens cross was cleared. Craig Ellison in the Bears goal had a couple of comfortable saves to make as Winsford looked for openings, but the Bears were looking the more threatening with Henderson just being denied by the keeper and Tom Schofield being flagged for offside when through on goal.
Stephens came to the Bears rescue as the half drew to a close, blocking an effort on the line. At the other end Main had a chance with a shot that just skimmed the bar.
Half time Winsford 0-0 Congleton
The Bears pressure paid off early in the second half. Main won back possession and used great footwork to beat his man then shot low and to the left into the net. The Keeper dived but then withdrew his hands when he thought it was going wide. It wasn’t, 1-0 Bears.
Now the Bears took control and were creating numerous chances, Henderson with a cross just over, Dan Cope with free-kick that went over the home wall and was cleared and Steve Foster and Cope with shots just wide.
Winsford had limited opportunities and a header was saved by Ellison and a low shot similarly. The Bears came agonisingly close when a Foster ball in was cleared, Cope collected and hit a looping shot just over the bar.
The Bears extended their lead in added time. They cleared a Winsford attack with ball out to sub Bevan Burey. He made a strong run down the wing and was fouled but the ref played advantage. He fed Foster who played the ball through to Warburton who fired home, 2-0 Bears.
The game was wrapped up two minutes later, Burey hitting a superb 25 yard shot into the corner. 3-0.
The final whistle soon followed, and the Bears had put Saturday’s defeat behind them with an excellent win.
Manager Brian Pritchard said after the game:
“Another clean sheet and good to bounce back from Saturday. We took our chances well in the 2nd half. A deserved 3 points”
