Berffro thump leaders Llan for 6

By

Goal fest at Cae Cynlas sees Berffro triumph 6-3

On Saturday it was back to league action following the remerkable welsh cup victory away at rivals Boded. Our opponents were local rivals Llanerchymedd who came into the game flying high, top of the league after 5 wins on the bounce. It had all the makings for a cracker, and so it proved.

The game started in the worse possible fashion for Berffro, we were caught napping from a long throw in and allowed Llan target man Chris Byast the space to control and volley his effort past Gav in goal to give the visitors a dream 0-1 lead after just 40 seconds. Undeterred by the awful start, we proceeded to step up our game and from that moment on we always looked threatening going forward and for large spells we dominated the first half. Connor Rees was first to have an effort at goal as his effort from the edge of the box fizzed wide, and alongside Steve Jenkins, they started to dominate the midfield battle for us. Up top, Nath Moore and Richard Roberts were already proving a handful for the Llan backline, and it was Nath’s power and direct running that got us the equaliser as he forced the Llan number 4 into a poor defensive header and pounced on the loose ball before clinically slotting passed the keeper. It was soon 2-1 and the poor start was out well and truly behind us, Dave Harper’s deep free kick found Nath, completely unmarked and with his back to goal he glanced it home with the deftest of touches, giving the keeper no chance. Having taken the lead we continued to press for more and the constant pressure from Nath and Rich up top, backed up by the tireless running of Steve Jones, was forcing all kinds of errors from the Llan defence. To the visitors credit they still carried a threat but gave Gav very little to worry about in between the sticks, and once again against some very pacey and tricky wingers, Earnshaw and Andrew nullified the threat incredibly well and were sharp into tackles and denying space. Our first half dominance should have been further enhanced with a third as Harper’s set piece this time found Rich in acres of space inside the box but he elected to head down across the face of goal rather than pullling the ball down with so much time to do so. The frontman soon redeemed himself however as, when found by a Harper cross in from the left, he made no mistake from 6 yards out, powering his header beyond the visitors custodian. 3-1 half time.

We were keen to ensure that the second half didn’t follow the same pattern as recent games were we’d sloppily conceded very early on and allowed opponents back into games, however some 10 minutes after the restart distaster struck as we struggled to deal with another Llan long throw and allowed the ball to bounce twice before the visitors’ Rob Jones pounced to flick home and give the league leaders renewed hope. Their hopes however were short lived, their two centre backs were guilty of overplaying at the back with Nath forcing one into a horrid square pass in his own box, Rich then nipped in and stole the ball off the other centre half who had tried to take him on, leaving him with the simplest of tap ins into the empty net with the keeper absolutely hapless. 4-2 became 5-2 very quickly as Connor got on the score sheet. Once again the nuisance running of Rich up top made something out of nothing as a long ball from midfield was played into the right channel, Llans centre half didn’t want to be out there and only proceeded to completely miss his attempted swipe tackle on Rich who broke clear on the byline, he picked out Connor, who settled himself perfectly before curling his effort superbly into the bottom corner to surely put the game to bed. Or so we thought!! Llan showed all of their battling qualities to yet again find a glimmer of hope, another long throw caused havoc, we failed to clear again and Llans leading goal scorer Rob Jones was in the right place yet again to prod home from close range. Despite a two goal cushion, this seemed to unsettle Berffro as we lost our rhythm for the next 10-15 mins and panicked slightly with Llan throwing more bodies forward. The visitors certainly caused panic with their set pieces and it was almost 5-4 but their centre half saw his effort come back off the post with Iwan doing well to clear the loose ball bobbling around in the box. We dug deep and weathered the storm despite the heavy pressure, with Iwan and Ioan at the back both communicating well and doing well to cope with the directness of the visitors approach. With the clock ticking down Llan seemed to lose their impetus as we started to get a foothold in the game again. The three points were finally sealed with 5 minutes remaining as the evergreen Gary Bolton latched onto a Steve Jenks flick on and cooly placed his effort into the bottom corner with the outside of his right foot. Full time 6-3, man of the match Andrew Jones.

An absolute belter for the neutral, a typical Anglesey derby, strong tackles, plenty of goalmouth action and 9 goals!! Well worth the £2 admission! For us, our recent good run of form continues, that’s 4 without defeat now and to beat the league leaders, scoring 6 in the process is very emphatic and some of our attacking play was very impressive. Some things obviously to work on for us as there always is but all in all a huge win and confidence is clearly sky high at the moment. Once again a very good team performance with everyone playing their part. Next up is the FAW Trophy tie away at Mynydd Llandegai! We’d appreciate your support once more for what's sure to be another tough test for us.
