German supporters cheer on Hamlet to weekend win

More than 50 supporters travelled all the way from Germany to cheer Dulwich Hamlet to victory over Sittingbourne at the weekend.
Champion Hill had a distinctly continental twang on Saturday as supporters of Hamburg club Altona 93 came to town and joined forces with the Hamlet faithful to produce a unique atmosphere in Dulwich.
The Germans were in town to take on Hamlet's supporters on Sunday, but were clearly keen to make a weekend of it as they partied away before, during and after Saturdays action from the Dulwich first team.
The trip came to pass as Dulwich supporters travelled to Hamburg in July last year, as part of their regular tours, where they took on fans from the German club who ply their trade at level five in German football.
Supporters team co-manager Shaun Dooley said: "One of our supporters Mishi Morath was in Hamburg on his travels and was at their ground taking pictures. He got chatting to one of their fans and it turned out that they were founded in the same year as us and that a Hamlet team including Edgar Kail had played there 88 years ago. For our supporters tour we arranged to take them on last summer and they looked after us so well in Hamburg right through our weekend. We got to play at their first team stadium so we were happy that they got to play on our ground too. The game on Sunday looked in doubt at one stage due to the weather but thankfully it went ahead."
The Hamlet supporters prevailed 6-2 on Sunday but the weekend was much more than the match for Mr Dooley, as Hamlet once again made friends in another part of Europe.
He added: " All the German guys were there on Saturday and they had a set of decks with them so we had a great time in the bar afterwards with them playing the music."
Mr Morath added: "It was an extremely emotional weekend, as supporters we feel so close to them. As a group of fans I am so proud that we, at Dulwich, have so many European links, all built up through our Supporters Team. There can be no other non-league fanbase like us."
