Eccleshill United 0-3 Winterton Rangers

By

The Eagles were soundly defeated as the unbeaten run is destroyed in convincing fashion.

Non-League day proved to be one to forget for Eccleshill United who was soundly defeated by Winterton Rangers in a game that saw the Eagles fail to find its recent form with one of the poorest performances of the season.

A goal towards the end of the first half was followed up by two in the second half as Winterton ran out convincing and deserved victors at the Mitton Group Stadium.

Despite the scoreline Sean Regan's men actually started the game stronger than the visitors, dominating the early moments of the game with the attacking pass and move play that has been so successful on full display.

The first chance of the game fell to Antony Brown, who is still searching for his maiden goal, with the striker being given a one on one opportunity after an excellent through ball by Anil Singh, only for his shot to be well saved. The chance was still alive though, when the ball fell to Matt Stor who fired the ball goalwards only for a brilliant block stopped what seemed like a destined goal.

Another chance then fell to the Eagles through a corner when Matt Mathers rose the highest to meet the ball, with his header beating everyone other than fellow teammate, Levi Maturine, who blocked the header on the line by accident.

Maturine was then the next Eccleshill man to be gifted a brilliant goalscoring opportunity, after Singh's show bounced back from the post the winger found the ball at his feet just yards out, only for the ball to fly over the net.

Regan's side were then made to pay for missed opportunities when Winterton found the back of the net with its first real chance of the game. Picking up the ball in midfield, the visiting attacker was easily allowed to run through the Eccleshill half before firing from outside the box and finding the back of the net.

Rangers nearly doubled its lead before the end of the half when the Winterton winger was denied by the post, only for the ball to bounce and hit Stor, somehow not going in for an own goal.

Things went from bad to worse for Eccleshill at the start of the second half when Luke Harrop was forced to withdraw from the game due to injury.

The Eagles never managed to settle in the second half, despite being the better team in the opening 45 minutes, Winterton looked comfortable and confident throughout the latter 45 minutes.

Poor defending then allowed the visitors to double its lead as the opposing striker managed to get past Sam Bradley and lobbed Dom Smith with a good finish, despite offside appeals from the Eagles.

It would be via an offisde that Eccleshill conceeded again, this time the decision deeming Andy Cooper offside in the opposing half. A long ball was sent into the Eagles box from the free kick and somehow Winterton came out on top of the phsyical battle, taking the ball around Smith for a simple tap in.

Despite several subs and changes in formation, Eccleshill couldn't get into the game although both Ethan Labad and Scott Stein looked positive coming on from the bench. Labad had the final chance of the game after some good passing play between Stein and Scott Manning, the left back delivered a brilliant cross only for Labad's header to drift over the bar.

With Eccleshill's winning run now screeching to a standstill, the club must now look forwards to Wednesday's clash with Yorkshire Amateurs as cup football returns to the Mitton Group Stadium.
