Oakmeadians women 10 - Ellingham & Ringwood 20

By Steve Benson

Our women are National Challenge South West 1 champions

Our women's side won their last league game of the season on Sunday 20-10 away at Oakmeadians to complete a remarkable 100% league record for the season and take the National Challenge South West 1 title.

In a tight game we took an early lead when our full back Chloe Barrett scored in the corner, but Oaks fought back with a try of their own to level the scores. Barrett then scored a second try from a counter attack to give us a 10-5 lead at the break.

In a hotly contested second half our wing three quarter Kiera Paul-Jones scored a superb individual try, but again Oaks hit back with a good try from a short penalty to close the gap to 15-10. Oaks then had their best spell of the game, but our defence held firm. Another counter attack from Barrett then led to some concerted pressure on the Oaks line and wing three quarter Nina Hoadley finished off a good move to score in the corner.

After the game our coach Henry Benson commented, “To maintain a 100% record over the season is a tremendous achievement”. He added, “We didn’t really play that well and I think nerves played their part, but the team demonstrated the character they’ve shown all season and today was all about getting the result, which I’m delighted to say we did”.
