We put in a strong performance in our opening Hampshire Division 1 fixture, but lost narrowly to United Services Portsmouth, who were relegated from the London leagues last season.
We started strongly and centre Josh Butcher built up an early 6-0 lead with two well struck penalty goals. Full back Chris Frost then scored a superb individual try in the corner. From the restart our young wing three quarter Will Jenkins made a lovely break and following some excellent support play lock forward tim linford crashed over under the posts. Butcher added the conversion to open up an 18-0 lead. At this point we were dominant, but US Portsmouth came back strongly with a converted try to make it 18-7 at the break.
Early in the second half a long range penalty from Butcher hit the post, but the visitors then dominated the next twenty minutes scoring three tries and two conversions to open up a 26-18 lead. We were then chasing the game and were unlucky to have a try disallowed. In the dying moments of the game fly half Charlie Cockram (pictured) scored a good individual try under the posts. Josh Butcher added the conversion with the last kick of the game, but this simply earned us a losing bonus point in a game we could have won.
