Fleetwood Town Council enabled one group of local youths to take part in an international rugby tournament in the Netherlands.

“The town council looks forward to working with the rugby club more in the future” Cllr Terry Rogers

A substantial sponsorship deal helped match fund-raising efforts by the under 15 parents and young players to make the Easter–weekend trip possible.

In return, the town council logo was prominently displayed on tour tracksuits and playing shorts.

Town council chairman Terry Rogers expressed his delight in supporting the European trip for the 22 players.

“It’s been our absolute pleasure to see so many youngsters involved in organised sport in Fleetwood. The town council agreed unanimously to support this trip and make the tour possible.”

Councillor Rogers was particularly pleased to highlight rugby’s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship.

“We’ve contributed because it’s a pleasure to see these youngsters getting fit, experiencing team work and learning the RFU values. The town council looks forward to working with the rugby club more in the future.

“The rugby club has been a feature in the town for a long time and have a long history developing young players and promoting juniors to the senior teams.

“All this fits in with our Healthier Fleetwood campaign and these lads were really looking forward to their Amsterdam trip and playing international rugby.”

Over 50 teams from The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and the UK took part in the day-long event.

Fleetwood started on the back foot following an opening defeat by a well-organised Sandbach side but an improved performance and draw followed against Dutch side Rugby Academy Noord. The Green & Gold side then recorded their only win of the tour against local side Kaza. The final game saw a second reversal this time at the hands of Reading.
