End of season try fest
Fleetwood treated the home fans to a try-fest on the last home fixture of the season at Melbourne Avenue against unfortunately relegated Workington
The visitors made the long trip from west Cumbria and were valiant opponents for large periods of the match but sadly were no match for a rampant green and gold team who ran in 12 tries in near-perfect conditions. A number of the Fleetwood players had undergone an intensive midweek training regime in Benidorm whilst those remaining enjoyed a rigorous session of Pilates delivered by club physio Lauren, finding muscles they didn’t know they had. Kris Phillips scored a personal tally of 4 tries to lead the season’s rankings. Brad Stapleton also ran in 2 with Rob Brookfield, Jack Crompton, Owen Brown, James Torkington and Karl Bowling also crossing the whitewash, as did Paul Bamber who sadly suffered a recurring knee injury in the process. Scott Richardson kicked a penalty and 9 conversions to round off the home scoring. Despite his best efforts skipper Ricky Newton once again failed to get over the line himself but would surely be happy with the team effort and performance. Sponsors Marston’s Brewery named young centre Owen Brown as their man of the match, who despite carrying injuries has had an outstanding run of form in the latter part of the season. Workington scored 2 converted tries of their own and should be complemented on their work-rate and determination.
Fleetwood now face 2 tough trips to Cumbria with away days at Aspatria on April 22 and league champions Carlisle on 29th April, postponed from last weekend.
