Mountain Slump To Defeat

By

Flint Mountain's poor league form continues as Acton FC claim a deserved victory at Rhosnesni High School

October has proven to be a challenging month so far for Flint Mountain, with cup wins sandwiching poor league form. After last week's victory over Bradley Park in the Premier Cup, Flint Mountain made another trip to Wrexham, where Acton FC welcomed the Mountain to Rhosnesni High School. With last week giving the opportunity to fringe players to make their mark, manager Rob Thelwell shifted the starting eleven. Shane Owens and Lee Messham come back into the starting line up, with Alex Millington and Dylan Roberts dropping to the substitutes bench.

Whilst Acton looked to utilise their pacy striker straight from the first whistle, the first real chance of the game fell to Flint Mountain. As Acton cleared the ball from a corner, it fell to Scott Forrester, whose low driven shot beat the goalkeeper, only to hit the inside of the post before rolling across the line and off the opposite post, before it was cleared away. Despite Flint Mountain having further chances to open the scoring, it was Acton who took the lead just after quarter of an hour. After beating the Mountain defence, the Acton striker's shot was saved by Ryan Roberts, who could only parry back out into the path of another Acton player, who had the easy task of firing into the empty net.

Flint Mountain were threatening from set pieces and shortly after a header whistled past the post from a free kick, they were awarded a penalty. Scott Forrester played a neat ball to Jimmy McGlone, who turned his man before he was brought down with a clumsy tackle. After his penalty miss last week, McGlone stepped back up to take this one, composing himself before coolly slotting the ball down the middle and into the net. With half time approaching, Flint Mountain suffered another blow when they conceded once again. Again, Acton got past the Mountain defence with a simple ball, before the striker saw his effort hit the crossbar. With no one tracking back, the rebound fell to another Acton player, who again needed to just tap into an empty net.

At half time, Flint Mountain were forced into a change, bringing on Alex Millington for Lee Messham, who suffered a knock towards the end of the first half. The change also saw a change to the formation, as Flint Mountain looked to counter the threat of Acton. The change paid dividends almost immediately, as Flint Mountain were level within four minutes of the restart. Rob Rush, who had just been introduced after Ryan Worrall picked up an injury, showed real determination to win the ball in the Acton area, where his challenge allowed the ball to reach Chris Layne, who fired low into the net.

Acton refused to give up throughout the half and their perseverance paid off, as they once again took the lead with twenty minutes to go. Once again, the Mountain defence was carved open and with no support, Acton got through as Roberts made another save. However, as with the first goal, the shot was parried to an Acton player who scored another easy chance. With Flint Mountain struggling to get another equaliser to level the proceedings, Acton dealt them a sucker punch, with a decisive fourth goal. As the ball was crossed into the area, the Acton player found his man unmarked in the box, before he steadied himself and fired past Roberts. Acton then soaked up the remaining Mountain attacks to claim a precious win.

With that deserved defeat, Flint Mountain find themselves dropping to fifth place in the standings. Next up for Flint Mountain is a return to Wat's Dyke Way, where the local rivalry resumes with CPD Sychdyn. Flint Mountain grabbed the win earlier in the month in the first round of the Queensferry Sports President's Cup, but Sychdyn have been improving recently and the game will be sure to be a spectacle to see. We hope to see you there.
