Fresh from the deserved victory over Halkyn United in midweek, Flint Mountain were looking to build some momentum, as they welcomed Airbus UK Broughton Youth to the Northop Hall Pavilion. With Andy Probert injured and unable to take his place in goal, Karl Leighton stepped up in his place. There were also first starts for new signings Liam Mortimer and Mark Hughes, and Alex Millington also started.
It was Flint Mountain who got off to the brighter start, but were unable to carve out a real chance on goal. Once Airbus had settled, they got into the game and started to threaten a lacklustre Mountain. With twenty minutes gone, Airbus got the breakthrough. After nicking the ball outside the Mountain penalty area, the Airbus player got into the box, before rounding Leighton and slotting into an empty net.
Just a couple of minutes later, the main talking point occurred, as Airbus were then reduced to ten men. Following a foul by Rob Rush, the Airbus player reacted terribly, by punching Rush, before punching Flint Mountain captain Damon Griffiths, who attempted to break up the pair. From the resulting free kick, Karl Leighton was forced to push the ball over his crossbar. As the corner was swund in, the Airbus player lost his marker and was left with a free header, which found the back of the net.
Flint Mountain tried to rally, and should have pulled a goal back, only to be denied by the crossbar. As Marc Gunther beat his man, he rounded the goalkeeper but his shot could only hit the crossbar.
In the second half, Flint Mountain took control of the half and looked to get themselves back into the game, and after Mark Hughes had seen his shot cannon off the crossbar again, Sean Wilkes did get a goal back. From a corner, Wilkes lost his man and headed the ball past the Airbus goalkeeper. Despite a further late surge, the young side held on to secure the win.
Next up for Flint Mountain is a trip on Tuesday evening to face Mold Town United. Kick off on Tuesday evening is 18:15.
