Borras No Match For Mountain

Braces from Jimmy McGlone and Sean Williams, along with goals from Jack Aitken and Keiran Farr secure the win on a wet afternoon against Borras Park Albion

After victory over Penyffordd last week maintained Flint Mountain's recent run and four point lead in the North East Wales League, they made the trip up to Brymbo this weekend to take on league new boys, Borras Park Albion. The game was initially in doubt, but a morning pitch inspection ensured the game would go ahead in the stormy conditions. Manager Rob Marshall was forced into a couple of changes, allowing Dean Hughes, Dylan Evans and Jimmy McGlone all to return to the starting line up.

Flint Mountain were immediately on the front foot as they pressed for an early goal. It took eleven minutes for it to arrive, courtesy of Jimmy McGlone. From a corner, Jake Williams delivered a perfect ball for McGlone to head into the net, in front of a stranded Borras goalkeeper. Borras quickly showed that they were going to make the game a fight when they equalised just four minutes later. Winning a free kick in the Mountain half, the ball was lofted into the penalty area. Despite the best efforts of defender Dean Hughes, the Borras player was able to direct his headed effort into the top corner, leaving Kirk Russell no chance.

The momentum quickly shifted again as Flint Mountain retook the lead after nineteen minutes. After getting through on goal, Sean Williams was able to knock the ball under the on-rushing goalkeeper, as he fell to the ground. With defender back to cover, the ball trickled into the net. Mountain then turned on the style as they extended their lead. Good work down the left then found Jimmy McGlone, who passed inside to David Walkiewicz on the edge of the penalty area. Walkiewicz then back-heeled the ball into the path of McGlone, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.

With half an hour gone, Sean Williams grabbed a second goal. After Alex Millington, on as a substitute, won back the ball, he found Williams in space. Williams turned and then fired an audacious lob over the Borras goalkeeper from 25 yards! Mountain pressed for further goals, but a half time they were firmly in control. In the second half, it took another ten minutes before Mountain added their fifth goal. Alex Millington was again provider as he found Jack Aitken in the penalty area. Aitken then smashed the ball across goal and into the net.

After Flint Mountain seemingly took their foot off the gas, Borras popped up with another goal with fifteen minutes to go. They were allowed forward before a deflected shot took the ball past Kirk Russell and into the net. Despite this, the win was secured with four minutes remaining. Jon Edmonds got a shot away, which was well saved by the goalkeeper. The ball rebounded into the path of Keiran Farr, who had the easy task of tapping into the empty net.

Next up for Flint Mountain is the second round of the Premier Cup, where we face off against last season's winners, in a repeat of the semi-final result. The Mountain were comfortably beaten 6-1 on that day, but with Mountain in good form and having beaten the young side early this season in the league, they will be looking to knock out the holders on the way to another semi-final spot.
