Silkmen sunk by Canaries

By

Flint's unbeaten start to the season was brought to an end at the Oval, courtesy of two first half goals from the hosts

Despite having plenty of possession, Flint lacked the all important cutting edge in front of goal, and never really looked liked scoring from open play, although did pose a threat from set pieces, particularly in the second half. Meanwhile, Caernarfon took full advantage of a couple of defensive lapses early in the game, and from then on were always quite comfortable.
The first goal arrived after 5 minutes. After withstanding some early Flint pressure, a long ball caught the Silkmen's rearguard square, and Darren Thomas galloped through and confidently lobbed Nik Lee-Bulmer to give the Cofis an early lead.
Flint displayed plenty of honest endeavour, but with new signing Alan Bull operating in a lone striker role, all too often lacked the guile to set him free , and their attacks were stifled relatively easily.
The game was effectively over as a contest after 18 minutes, when, following a Nathan Craig free kick from wide on the left, Thomas was gifted too much time and space in the Flint box to head home his second goal.
Flint had a glimpse of the Caernarfon goal on 37 minutes from a free kick of their own. Joe Palmer put in a nice delivery from the right, and Carl Rodgers got to the ball first, but didn't connect cleanly, and Ramsey in the Caernarfon goal, collected it comfortably.
In the second period, Flint forced a number of corners and free kicks, but were unable to seriously test Ramsey, with a couple of decent looking chances ending up off target.
For their part, Caernarfon were content to play the ball around and soak up the Flint pressure, and then spring forward every so often and try and claim the killer third goal. Their best chance was in the 73rd minute, when dangerman Thomas displayed some good trickery by jinking past a couple of tackles in the box, and reaching the bye line. He then pulled the ball back to the six yard box, inviting one of his team-mates to apply the finishing touch, but Ieuan Hewitt showed great anticipation for Flint by intercepting and clearing the ball for a corner, and in the process surely saved his side from going further behind.
With this convincing win, the Canaries underlined their title credentials, whilst Flint will look to pick themselves up for Tuesday's encounter with Airbus, another side who are serious title challengers.
