Rugby Club Bike Ride Day Out - 14th April

By Richard Bunton

A great day for a social with a bit of competition

13 of Footscray’s finest headed down to the New Forest to take part in the Wiggle Spring Sportive, an 81 mile loop around Hampshire as an end of season test for the legs. M Atterton and T Winter dropped out at the last moment citing ‘reasons’, allowing an in shape Bookie to join the group with a bike that was definitely not stolen.

Saturday started with many bowls of Sam-friendly-coconut-porridge and an exceedingly chipper Mungo, and after several hours of faffing we were on our way, only for T Kiddle’s bike to get a puncture after several hard metres.

The team were sporting bespoke Footscray cycling jerseys designed by T Crawford, who managed to get a new set delivered just in time after leaving the first lot on the train.

We looked almost competent for the first half, before Bookie bent his bike in half and had to retire from the race. Rookie saw the opportunity for a nap and all-you-can-eat sweets, so offered to stay behind.

Three accidents followed, Birch fancied some off road action, then Sam forgot how his legs worked and finally George took a bit too much speed into a gravelly corner and ended up somersaulting while still clipped in.

P Cousins broke from the pack with 10km to go to bag another podium finish, closely followed by I McMeckan who brought his own medal.

A thoroughly enjoyable weekend, with hopefully more to come.
