Temperatures soaring up to 27C, and thunder rolling round for much of the second half in the oppressive weather, both sides put in a splendidly entertaining performance, but it was Glapwell who lost their 100% record.

Phoenix made the more impressive start and Ryan Hopkins in the home goal had to save a shot from James Cregan. When Glapwell hit back, Joshua Parfitt had one shot blocked, and in the next attack got onto a low Jake Gallagher cross but the ball rolled wide of a post under pressure. Following some excellent play by Steve McDonnell, Phoenix skipper ROBERT GORMAN put his side in front on 12 minutes with a shot into the corner of the net which might well have been an intended cross. Gorman returned the compliment then to McDonnell who fired wide. Glapwell were back on terms after 21 minutes when persistence by Parfitt got the ball to Lee Naughton who scored with a delightful low shot on the turn into the bottom cormer. When Phoenix returned to the attack McDonnell made a fine solo run but fired wide across the face of goal. At the other end, Tom Norris fired a free kick wide and the same player got onto Parfitt’s low cross but couldn’t scramble the ball beyond the prostrate Conor Merone. Merone then made an excellent double save, first from Parfitts’s shot and then from Norris’ follow up. Naughton then shot narrowly over the angle from a Norris set up. McDonnell’s best work for Phoenix had come on the left, but he moved to the right to force Hopkins into a save from his free kick.

Daniel Russell headed just over the angle as Glapwell started the second half well, and when Parfitt cut in from the left after a mazy run Merone saved down by the foot of his upright. A smart move at the other end save Hopkins save from James Bowman, before a spat saw Cregan and Ross Murcott booked after a lecture, and it seems that this was later carried on in the dressing room complex. Phoenix regained the lead just after the hour when STEVEN McDONNELL took a Gorman pass and shot into the bottom corner, Hopkins getting a hand to the ball at full stretch but only succeeding in knocking it against the foot of an upright. Glapwell retaliated

immediately and John Sainthouse brought down substitute Adam Kimberley only for Jake Ballinger to crack the resultant penalty over the bar. Naughton then failed to get a touch to an impressive Ryan Cancellara cross in front of goal. But Phoenix were always dangerous on the break and Hopkins did well to push out a Cregan shot at full stretch and then turn the Norris rebound round the post. Glapwell should have been back in the game but Norris wasted a great chance from a Josh Aitken cross by heading wide of the target with only the goalkeeper to beat. With thunder rolling around the ground Aitken fouled Ballinger and TOM NORRIS showed how a penalty should be taken. This with eight minutes remaining. Glapwell hit back and Dan Harrison headed a corner against his own bar. In trying to ensure a fourth goal Tom Colclough was injured and had to be carried off the field leaving Phoenix with ten men as they had already used up all of their substitutes. But it didn’t stop them breaking away again three minutes into stoppage time through McDonnell who put Matthew Moorwood in only to be brought down by Hopkins. This time skipper ROBERT GORMAN took the penalty and was successful.
