Ramsbottom United 4 GNE 2

By

For 38 minutes on Saturday GNE fans were salivating about their side. From the get-go they had attacked Ramsbottom with verve, causing panic whenever they ventured forward, which was often. All that was lacking was a finishing touch to the myriad chance

Jude Oyibo was hot from the start, his pace running at the Ramsbottom back line causing some panic. In the 4th minute a run down the left saw him burn off Luke Thompson running onto a bouncing ball. He couldn’t quite bring it under control, but 3 minutes later his trickiness did pay dividends when he was brought down in the box. Penalty.
Courtney Meppen-Walter stepped up and slotted home to give the Hillmen the early lead.
Ramsbottom had fleeting moments, but no real chances whilst Lee Rick had a fierce shot charged down by the defence and Oyibo continued to run riot running at the back line. One from halfway on the right, in which he was fouled on the touchline but played on, before cutting into the box, only to be stopped by the diving keeper at his feet had fans agog, whilst another run ended with a shot from an angle that Martin Fearon did well to push away, diving to his right.
Harry Brazel headed wide and later shot wide on the half volley. Another debutant Callum Chippendale hit the outside of the post when put in by Ben Deegan. And then came a deflating blow, and it was a little self-inflicted.
Kyle Brownhill put in a cross-cum-shot from the left wing and looking as though he had it covered, Russ Saunders let it sneak under his body, allowing the ball to nestle in the bottom corner. It knocked the life out of the Hillmen, who suddenly needed the break and Saunders was forced to save from Tom Brooks’ drive and Jerome Wright got in on the angle, but chose the wrong option in cutting back rather than shooting and the chance was gone.
For all their dominance in the first half, GNE could not get going in the second. Oyibo was neutralised by the home side, and with it the Hillmen’s thrust evaporated. More so when the Rams scored a 52nd minute goal. A corner from the right was swung in, and Wright met it with a precise downward header into the corner. 2-1.
In particular the home side’s number 10, Greg Daniels, was having a fine afternoon, dragging the Glossop defence all over the place to create space for his colleagues whilst firing in the odd shot himself. But then suddenly GNE got back into the game on 76 minutes when Billy Hasler-Cregg got in on the left running onto a Brazel pass. He cut inside and fired a shot onto the inside of the post, but the ricochet fell nicely for Deegan to poke home.
Parity only last three minutes. Rammy had already wasted one good chance when Max Hazeldine put them back in front in the simplest way possible, heading in a flick-on from a long throw.
Glossop didn’t give up, Brazel hitting the bar, but an indication of how luck was going for them saw Ramsbottom ultimately seal the game. From a corner, Meppen Walter’s effort was cleared off the line, and suddenly The Rams had a three-on-two break on the GNE goal. They played between their numerical advantage very well, the move ending with Jamie Rother slotting past Saunders.
At 4-2, and into injury time, that was curtains for GNE. They will have to take solace from the first half an hour or so and build on that.
