Hillmen breeze past the Gingerbreads in League Cup Victory!

By

Glossop North End finally got their first competitive win this season in a convincing 6-0 victory at Grantham Town in the Integro League Cup 1st Round.

Mark Canning & Andy Bishop took their Glossop North End squad to Grantham hoping to end a disappointing run of form which saw the Hillmen take just 2 points from 6 games in Evo Stick West. Defender Joel Bembo-Leta kept his place in the starting 11 following his debut at Widnes on Saturday. Jason Hill and Jordan Bove were also both brought into the starting 11 in a midfield that included the ever present skipper Matty Russell. Adam Cooper kept his place at right back after numerous positive performances of late.

Within the first couple of minutes it was obvious GNE were up for the fight, with Jordan Bove striking agonisingly wide after getting in behind the Grantham back 4. Darrhyl Mason looked lively from the outset, his looping header just clearing the crossbar from a long in throw from the right courtesy of Adam Cooper. Just 3 minutes later the Hillmen were to have their closest chance yet in the game, Jordan Bove once again causing problems for the hosts, his header bouncing off the woodwork to keep the score at 0-0.

Just 10 minutes has passed before Glossop North End broke the deadlock, Matty Russell putting away a chance in the box after a poor headed clearance came to his feet, the skipper was allowed to take 2 touches before slotting the ball home, 1-0.

Barely 3 minutes had passed before The Hillmen were to double their advantage. A free kick from the halfway line from Matty Russell was allowed to bounce in the box and even bounce off the crossbar! Luckily Joel Bembo-Leta, still high up the pitch after the set piece, was on hand to nod in the rebound off the crossbar to put Glossop 2-0 ahead.

Just when you thought the game couldn’t get any better for the visitors, Glossop added a third goal just 2 minutes later! Olly Thornley was in the right place at the right time to shoot through a crowded penalty area and into the goal for Glossop’s third goal! 3-0.
The remaining 30 minutes of the first half saw Glossop North End really consolidate their position in the game as they began to look comfortable. The Hillmen could have had a forth goal before half time, Darrhyl Mason getting in behind the defence and lobbed the keeper from distance, however with the goal gaping the ball bounced over the crossbar!
HT Grantham 0-3 Glossop North End

The hosts started the second half a little brighter than Glossop, who looked a little slow out the blocks in the early stages of the second half and had to soak up some pressure from the home side. However the pattern of play changed quickly after GNE were awarded a penalty. The responsibility of the spot kick fell to captain Matty Russell, who calmly converted the spot kick into the left hand side to make in Grantham 0-4 GNE.

GNE again were made to defend a small spell of pressure from the hosts but a solid back 4 of Adam Cooper, Joel Bembo-Leta, Olly Thornley and Will Beasley kept things tight at the back, leaving keeper Russ Saunders with very little to do in the game.

Glossop got their fifth goal through the tireless work rate of striker Darrhyl Mason, who evaded the offside trap to get in behind the Grantham back line, neatly rounded the keeper before calming finishing in the bottom right corner, great technique from Darrhyl. Grantham 0-5 GNE.

It seemed to be one of those nights were everything went the way of the visitors, the referee awarding Glossop North End yet another penalty, this time however, the Hillmen were not so fortunate, Matty Russell’s strike came crashing off the crossbar and was cleared away.
Finally the score became 6-0 in the final moments of the game, a low cross from the right hand side was badly deflected into his own net by Grantham defender Sam Brown. The referee then blew for full time. Grantham Town 0-6 Glossop North End.

In a game that saw the hosts play a range of academy and fringe players, some may see this as a game Glossop should have won regardless. However, you can only play who is in front of you and Glossop did the job on the night. It is hoped that this confidence inspiring result will be taken into the upcoming league game with Droylsden this coming Saturday, where an anticipated bumper crowd will pack into Surrey Street for this local derby in Evo Stick West.
