Lee Shaw’s 25th minute goal was enough to give Grantham all three points from their long trip to Colwyn Bay. The win means 7 unbeaten for the Gingerbreads and sees them rise to 14th in the table with 46 points.
This was a game where the score line didn’t reflect Grantham’s superiority and only a series of saves from The Seagulls keeper Craig Ellison prevented a larger winning margin.
Grantham pressed from the off but it was Colwyn Bay who had the first shot from Adam Morgan on 6 minutes but it was straight at Jake Turner who saved comfortably. Lee Shaw was getting behind the Colwyn Bay back line but was twice ruled just offside.. On 14 minutes he got past the Colwyn Bay right back but chose to square the ball instead of shooting and the chance was lost. Colwyn Bay defender Liam Gibson did have a sight of goal but scuffed his shot and Turner saved easily. Grantham began to dominate with Dylan Burns firing over from 30 yards on 18 minutes. Lee Shaw fed Grant Ryan who brought a good save from Ellison on 19 minutes and a minute later Ellison came to the rescue again with an excellent one handed save from Grant Ryan again. Nathan Quirk chanced his arm from 35 yards on 21 minutes but his shot was high and wide. Grantham returned to the attack and Ben Harris brought another good save from Ellison before Grantham got the goal their pressure deserved on 25 minutes. Grant Ryan flicked the ball on and Lee Shaw fired home past Ellison as the keeper came out to put Grantham a goal up. Grantham remained well on top for the remainder of the half. The home side were restricted to long range efforts that didn’t trouble Turner. Ellison saved from Burns and Shaw and Grant Ryan both had shots go narrowly wide as Grantham went in at half time a goal to the good.
Colwyn Bay introduced Josh Sumner for Stephen Wilson at half time. Grantham had an early scare when Ellis Storey headed back to Turner the Grantham keeper had to react quickly to kick clear at the expense of a throw in. Grantham returned to the attack with Colwyn’s defence twice doubling up on Shaw to crowd out the Grantham striker as he threatened to increase the Gingerbreads lead. Grantham went close to a second goal on 54 minutes when Grant Ryan’s goal bound strike following a corner was headed off the line by Bradley Bauress. Colwyn won a free kick 35 yards out on 62 minutes and when Bauress played the ball in Ellis Storey and Carl Lamb tussled in the area but the result was a goal kick to Grantham. Grantham introduced Ben Saunders for Grant Ryan on 64 minutes and two minutes later Ben Harris saw his shot go narrowly wide. Ellison then saved from Shaw with his legs and as he followed up the loose ball Shaw went down in the box but referee Mr Holmes waived away his claims for a penalty. Play was becoming scrappy. Colwyn’s Carl Lamb fired well wide in a rare attack for the home side. Colwyn introduced Steven Boothman for Jack Kelleher on 69 minutes but they could make little impression on the Grantham defence which was being well marshalled by Stefan Galinski and Lewis Carr. Grantham brought on Emmott for Harris on 76 minutes and two minutes later came close to a second goal when Ben Saunders shot hit a post. Colwyn were still being restricted to long range efforts which were off target and didn’t trouble Turner. Emmott put a free kick over the top after Shaw had been fouled as Grantham ended the game on top. Grantham brought on Leandro Browne for Dylan Burns with 3 minutes remaining. With 5 minutes added by the referee Grantham were able to see out the game for three well deserved points.
