THURLOW NUNN PREMIER LEAGUE

Showing no signs of Saturday’s disappointing result against Clacton, Rovers started strongly against their high flying second placed visitors and opened the scoring on five minutes when Sam Bennett was put through on goal and lashed an unstoppable shot past keeper Alfie Stronge.

With their confidence high Rovers played some lovely flowing football but were guilty in giving away possessions far too often, allowing Woodbridge to get back onto the offensive and it was from a set piece that the scores were levelled when an unmarked Taylor Southgate headed powerfully home in a congested goal area. Undeterred, Rovers responded strongly and it was Graeme Turner who restored the lead on 20 minutes when he slotted home following a four man passing move and great cross from Luke Haines.

The second half saw a regenerated Woodbridge with the absentee starters managing to arrive and following a couple of substitutions took the game to Rovers forcing them to defend for the most part. Discipline began to suffer and careless tackles in dangerous positions resulted in four unnecessary bookings for the home team and handed the initiative back to the visitors. There were unbelievable misses from both teams when a couple the efforts looked easier to score and the last twenty minutes resembled a scene from ‘The Alamo’ as Woodbridge battered the resolute Rovers defences. A penalty was awarded to Woodbridge late on but the decision reversed to the delight of Rovers after the referee consulted his linesman as an off side had been flagged seconds before the award. Rovers defence held strong under the resulting sieges and ran out 2-1 winners to the delight of the 103 supporters and three very valuable points were gained to move into 12th place with games in hand.
