Hertford welcomed old adversaries Westcombe park to Hoe Lane on Satrurday. An excellent crowd following the VP's lunch, which saw many old faces returning to the lane to watch an exciting game of rugby in which 7 tries were scored. Park had about 60 % of possession as they caught and drove off their lineout time and time again, but it did not result in any sort of score. When Herfford had possesion and realised where the space was they exploited it to great effect.
The game started at a frantic pace with both sides making silly errors. From the kick off Hertford made a handling error and from the resulting scrum gave away a penalty which Westcombe kicked to the corner rather than going for the points. Hertford got a penalty after Westcombe drove the Hertford pack back 10 metres which was earned by the tenacious Joannu. From the next scrum Hertford got their bearings in the scrum and earned a penalty, followed by another at the next lineout after some foul play from Coombe. Herftford made excellent ground from the lineout when Allen made 15 metres in the centre of the park, the ball was then shipped to Streets on the other wing by the accurate passing of Lloyd. Great clearout work from the ruck meant quick ball and with another sublime pass by Lloyd put Elston in to space and he made 30 metres before being hauled down very close to the coombe try line. Coombe were lucky to get a penalty and then caught and drove again from the resulting lineout but did not make much ground.
At this point Ben Lloyd had to have running repairs for a broken nose and kyle Lemon came on for 10 minutes at fly half.
Hertford continued to break the Coombe gain line at will, but for a bit more composure should have scored a couple of tries. On one of these occasions Lloyd (who had a great game) found man of the match Kinsley with an exquisite pass, he found Sargent who passed to the rampant Hughes and from the resulting ruck Hertford got a penalty which Taylor converted.3 nil to Hertford.
From the kick off Kinsley made 20 metres. The ruck was then Box kicked by the irascible Sargent and it was pin point accurate for the chasing Allen to catch on the full and go untouched under the posts from the halfway line.10 nil Hertford.
Coombe got a score back shortly after this when there pressure resulted in a penalty in front of the posts.10-3.
On 28 minutes Hertford had a lineout on the Coombe 10 meter line and Ellis made 5 metres and then assisted by Torran and Morgan ,Hughes made another 10 metres. The ball was then shipped blind to lloyd and Corcoran hit a great blocker line and quick hands by Lowe puts Allen in for his 2nd try of the day.Taylor kicked the conversion from the touch line to make the score 17-3.
On 38 mins good defence from Herftord firstly from Sargent and then from the aggresive Smart earned Herford a penalty which Taylor converted to make the score 20-3. Coombe refused to buckle and just before half time had another good catch and drive which resulted in Corcoran being yellow carded.
Half-time 20-3.
2nd half
Belton came on for Torran and shortly after Hewitt replaced the Mobile Morgan and Lemon replaced Allen but not before Allen scored another try after a Herford lineout on the coombe 10 metre went horribly wrong but the fleetfooted Hughes made a great break and added a sidestep to make 15 metres. Kinsley from the ensuing ruck made 10 metres assisted by Belton and Hewitt. Sargent found Lloyd with an excellent pass and then Lowe ran an unselfish line to attract 3 defenders.Lloyd to Smart to Taylor and then to the hungry Allen who scores.25-3.
On 54 minutes Coombe scored a try through a mix up in the Hertford back line which resulted in an interception try.25-10.
On the hour mark Herford scored the best try of the game. From the scrum Belton Found Lloyd who put Taylor and then the muscular Streets in to space on the right hand touch line and he made good yardage. The ball is quickly recycled to Lloyd. Hughes then made good ground. Quick ball from the ruck and Smart, created an outstanding outside break to put the Rangy Lemon in for a try.32-10.
The last Herford try came from good defence and linespeed on the half way line and after good work from Belton,Taylor,Kinsley and Ellis combine well to put in Lemon for his 2nd try of the day (with Allen moaning that he could have got 5!!!!!).39-10.
After this score Hertford had two more yellow cards and coombe came back at the death to score a well earned try to make the final score 39-17.
