New Pitch at the CSG

By Paul Sergeant

Further Update

Following yet another very wet winter and with hardly any home games being played between the beginning of November through to the end of March for the last few seasons, the club's committee took the massive decision to finance the complete re-drainage of the pitch. This was last done in the late 1970's by the old method of using clay pipes with many of them having collapsed over the years. Gone are the days of playing on pitches which basically ended up as mud heaps!!

Contractors Danvic Turf Care Ltd from Longridge began the work to install a brand new sand based pitch on Bank Holiday Monday and to date they have scraped off the top surface - installed 1200 metres of drains and 7400 metres of Sand Slits across the drains. LS Systems have also laid a pipe around the perimeter of the pitch for an irrigation system.

Update: Friday 8th June
Work continued at a pace yesterday with the contractors breaking up the surface with a rotavator and then spreading 240 tonne of sand over the surface ready for today's incorporation into the existing soil. Meanwhile the irrigation system is almost in place - going to need it if this dry spell of weather continues!!

Update: Friday 22nd June
Typical - Biblical rain until late May and now a drought!!
Hard work by LS Systems in erecting the water tank and positioning the container onto a concrete base behind the goal at the Station Road end of the ground and then connecting a water & electric supply from the Village Hall. Danvic continue to level the ground in preparation for drill seeding to begin which has been delayed due to the current dry weather.

Wednesday 27th June
Heat wave!! First full watering of the newly grass seeded pitch at Station Road started on Monday, 24000 litres of water applied over a 3 hour period each morning so far this week, the ground is so dry so we’re going to have to repeat this every day for the next few weeks but it will be all worth it in the end.
