Holwell get back to action with comfortable home win!

After the disappointment of no football for weeks due to bad weather, the Holwell ground crew were able to present a decent surface to play on in this, Holwell’s first league match since the end of January.

The visitors were in a worse position, having not played a league match since 13th January and during that time having had to rebuild the side due to players leaving en masse after the defection of the previous manager to Holbrook.

Holwell Manager Andy Gray had been working hard in training to try and get some stability, confidence and new thinking into the squad to play in a way he was more confident would move the team up the league and away from any trouble at the end of the season.

Holwell started well with debutant Pele Orton showing good skills as he evaded defenders to put in Liam Ambrose but his shot was hurried and slipped past the right hand post.

There followed a period of real pressure on the visitors goal as Ross Cragg and Liam Ambrose imposed themselves on the visitors defence.

Holwell forced the pace in the first period with Borrowash struggling to clear their lines effectively. After three corners in a row the ball fell to Michael Stevenson who did well to clear the ball out of his feet and shoot to the right of the keeper who saved but it was a good effort.

Orton was causing problems for Borrowash and the victim of some physical challenges one which led to a free kick in a good spot for Holwell on 14mins. Left edge of the eighteen yard box Chapman crossed and Ross Cragg was unlucky as the ball sailed over to him at the back post but keeper Whelehan did well to smother the attempt.

But Borrowash started to get things together and Harry Bailey should have done better when presented with a clear shot at goal on 18mins but his weak shot went easily past the left hand post of home keeper Witham’s goal.

Tom Harris had been stretching his legs with some strong runs through the midfield and it was after such a run he moved in from the left hand side outstripping three defenders before sending a teasing low cross across the front of goal which the lively Kyle Reek got to for a simple tap in to put Holwell in front on 18mins.

No more than the home side had deserved after the early pressure, and the dominance continued as Holwell were well on top with Borrowash holding on despite constant pressure from the home side. Holwell just couldn’t seem to convert their dominance into goals as chances went missing.

Holwell continued their dominance when on 31mins, Tom Harris did well to win a ball in midfield which he seemed to have let get too far in front of him showing good determination to win the ball back in the tackle and feed Liam Chapman. Chapman got control of the ball and set off holding off defenders as he broke into the box to slam the ball past Whelehan to put the home side two up.

Unfortunately for Holwell Harris had to go off not long after due to a knee injury to be replaced by David Hazeldine but the home side continued their strong performance to end the half well in control and at this point there was only really one team in it.

Holwell started where they left off at the start of the second half looking comfortable but play began to be scrappy with a few in the home side seemingly looking as though they had won the game. Passes started to go astray and Borrowash started to gain confidence though the back four of Wright, Bitmead, Betteridge and Chapman supported by Witham in goal did well as the pressure built.

However on 65mins Borrowash’s centre forward Shay Wiggins came close as Witham had to look smart and turn his effort away for a corner but from this corner the visitors got back into the game as Adrian Leszczynski was able to score at the back post.

Thankfully this was a wake-up call to the home side and order was restored as they saw out the rest of the match, the home side upping their game and concentration to get back on top with Ambrose really unlucky on 76mins.

Good work by Michael Stevenson found Ambrose who broke into the box beating full back Boddy before sending over a cross come shot which deceived the keeper before skimming along the top of the bar then cleared by a defender.

A much needed win and three points for Holwell with new players Betteridge, Cragg, Ambrose and Orton doing well and Harris continuing his recovery though it is hoped he will be fit for Tuesday nights second round League Cup tie at home to Holbrook.

Holwell: Witham, Wright, Bitmead, Betteridge, Chapman, Reek, Harris(Hazeldine), Stevenson, Orton, Ambrose, Cragg(B Smith). Not Used: Cowling, Andrews.
