A game between two sides struggling towards the bottom of National 1 saw the visitors taking the first 21 points in the first 26 minutes without response which left the home supporters moaning and groaning and whispering ‘we are doomed’. But after a magnificent fight back the hosts turned the game round to become victors and take 5 well deserved and welcome points.
Esher started the game looking very lively and dangerous with Boatman, Seccombe and Trotter scoring 3 tries with Boatman adding three conversions. Leaving the hosts struggling to gain any scraps of possession and looking to be in disarray.
Thankfully, Esher gave away a penalty which was kicked to the corner and from a catch and drive Stout took a try converted by Green. Hull Ionians realised that they could gain more from this change in pattern of game play and 6 minutes later placed another penalty towards the corner for another catch and drive scored by Ali Thompson and converted by Green.
Four minutes later another penalty given away by Esher saw a repeat of the previous two catch and drives when James Sanderson went over and again Green adding the conversion. The half ending in a 21 all draw and game on.
Following the break the hosts gave away a penalty near to the posts which was punished by a yellow and from a scrum Ali Bone scored a converted try to take Esher back into the lead.
Six minutes later yet another lineout close out saw Rikki Stout take advantage of a catch and drive to score another converted try bring the sides level again.
Ten minutes went by without any scores being taken until Isaac Green slotted over a penalty to take the hosts into a slender 3 point lead.
On 73 minutes Esher suffered a yellow card which gave the hosts the chance of adding more pressure and Sam Wilson seized the opportunity to score in the corner with green adding the extras. This sealed the game for Hull Ionians who eventually took another try on 80 minutes through Joe Allott.
Hopefully this performance will add confidence into the Hull Ionian team and we will go onto a few more wins in the near future.
