KING'S RUGBY The home of KCS Old Boys RFC

Douglas Mobsby OBE

By Tom Moore

Douglas Mobsby passes away aged 79.

Douglas Mobsby, erstwhile KCS Wimbledon and UCL, joined KCSOB at the first opportunity and enthusiastically contributed on the playing side before in due course progressing to join the local constituent refereeing panel. In his capacity of an arbiter of the rules he performed an essential service to the Club's reserve teams at a time when five or six XVs were regularly fielded on a Saturday afternoon.

Robin Bannister remembers greatly enjoying Doug's "myopic refereeing", including on one occasion holding up the game whilst a venerable lock forward struggled to do up his boot laces; he was a true gentlemen of the old school.

Doug was a mild-mannered and softly spoken, but showed the inner steal of a distinguished City lawyer when the occasion demanded. He was required to do just this when sending of a Merton player for a blatant punch with the commendably crisp words - "you'll have to go!" Like all good referees, Doug was not afraid to be the bearer of bad news to the home side when required and did not flinch in denying Lindsey Walton a try, determining that Greg Reece-Smith had dragged the maul over the line from an offside position.

Doug and his wife Sheilah were valued supporters of Club and regular attendees at lunches. The condolences of all at King's are extended to Sheilah, their daughters and extended family.

Doug passed away on 11th March and his funeral will take place at 1130 on Thursday 30th March at St.Dunstan's Church, Cheam SM3 8QH. There will be a reception afterwards at Nonsuch Mansion in nearby Nonsuch Park (SM3 8AL).

If there are any OKs who wish to attend they are asked to kindly notify Robin Bannister on banshee@dinas92.fsnet.co.uk so he may liaise with those who need to know.
