Long Eaton Rugby are storming ahead this season as they secured their second bonus point win in two weeks on Saturday 12th January at West Park. The win cements their place at second in the Midlands 2 North (East) league, after being promoted last season.
The team faced Matlock at home, starting strongly and dominating in the first 20 minutes of the game. A great defence against a strong and direct Matlock team allowed Long Eaton to take a 21-12 lead at half time.
Long Eaton continued to look dangerous into the second half, attacking from all over the pitch. A solid finish saw Long Eaton’s defence stop Matlock from scoring a fourth try bonus point. The team scored a further 14 points in the last five minutes of the game, bringing the final score to 52-19 to Long Eaton.
Try scorers included Ben Milton, who scored three, Del Veenendaal who score two and Jacob Wright, George Finney and Gary Sumpter who all scored one try each. Fly Half Rory Williams converted six out of eight tries scored. Man of the Match was awarded to Tinashe Mwashayireni.
Long Eaton Ladies also saw victory at home to Matlock this weekend, winning their match 15-12 on Sunday 13th January.
Long Eaton’s 2nd XV also played against Matlock, this time away, losing out 37-5.
The score line didn’t reflect the great defence put in by the team throughout, however a lack on composure meant Long Eaton struggled to gain possession. Matlock used their experience and didn’t let Long Eaton settle.
A try was scored by Paul Wakefield and Man of the Match was awarded to Josh Asling for this ball carrying.
