U7s v Chesterfield

By

Report by Bob Truswell

Mansfield were once again able to field both a Lions and Tigers team to play against Chesterfield in the beautiful surroundings of Worksop College. The large squad comes as a result of the commitment of the mums and dads who bring their children to matches and training every week. Both players and parents are a credit to the club.

Chesterfield were only able to field five Under 7 players so a big “Thank You” to the Mansfield boys and girls who volunteered to play for Chesterfield in both matches.

Lions

We are now starting to see some structure emerging amongst the Lions team. The team showed a lot more discipline in attack and defence and all players paid careful attention to the coaches instructions. Mansfield scored some good tries through William (2) and Jack (including one that was an excellent team effort and the result of seven or eight passes). The coaches can see that the attacking work on the training ground is paying off. The scoring was completed by Harry G who scored an amazing touchline-hugging try whilst fending off at least four players.

Unfortunately, tagging once again let the Lions down. Several Chesterfield tries were scored by players who evaded three or four Mansfield tag attempts. We know what we need to focus on in training next week.

Tigers

The Tigers played Chesterfield very soon after playing their Lions counterparts. The gorgeous, hot day meant that the Tigers had to knuckle down to ensure they did themselves justice. The enthusiastic Mansfield supporters on the touchline saw a greatly improved performance from the Tigers, and especially Rhys who rounded off a superb game with a try. Chesterfield ran in four tries but were greatly aided by their Mansfield loanees, Henry and Abigail. Both scored a try (for Chesterfield!) and Abigail also put in a blazing tagging performance. We now need to build on this to make sure that this is replicated in a Mansfield shirt. Finally, well done to Alex who came on as sub at half time and was playing his first match for the club.

A reminder to parents to get the Player of the Year voting forms back to Gary by 15th April at the latest. The Awards Presentation will take place on 19th May at the Clubhouse.
