Marine were beaten 1-0 by Nantwich Town at the Marine Travel Arena on Tuesday night, further dampening spirits following the Mariners FA Cup exit at the hands of Salford City over the weekend.
The opening goal arrived in the last minute of the first half - the ball appeared to go out of play before it was returned to the box and poked beyond Martin Fearon by Craig Lindfield.
Both teams seemed to opt for keeping the ball for as little time as possible before lumping it high and far into the opposition half but, for the most part, it didn’t work.
The second half was much the same as the first with the home side unwilling to allow the Dabbers to play the way they like in what was a sturdy defensive display by Marine.
As the game began to wind down, Marine had Nantwich up against the wall but were unable to capitalise on their late dominance - a frustrating evening for the hosts.
A shining light for Marine is Chris Doyle who, alongside Danny Shaw, yet again, put in a man of the match performance under the floodlights in Crosby.
The loss means that Neil Young’s men fail to move further away from Witton Albion, putting any plans on Marine thinking about climbing the table on hold for now.
