Match Summary - MDTFC v Basford United

The Basford Story Continues

Please note this is not intended to be a match report, but a summary of today's game.

With a number of players unavailable Manager Martyn Davies was forced to again reshuffle his team selection; the starting line up for the game versus Basford United showed three changes from the team that started in the mid-week game versus AFC Telford United.

Additionally MDTFC were only able to name two substitutes.

MDTFC started strongly and went ahead in the 11th minute with a goal from Joe Cuff - this being the first goal we have scored since the 13th January.

It would appear that we were denied a 'stone wall' penalty in the 20th minute (Basford's words not mine) - had that been given the mood of the game would no doubt have been changed.

Basford United equalised, via a penalty, in the 33rd minute - the score at Half Time was a creditable 1-1.

Unfortunately Basford United scored a further 3 goals in the second half to clinch the game 4-1. (Recorded crowd - 171)

This result means that Basford now only need a further 8 points from 10 games to be guaranteed automatic promotion - a fantastic achievement.

Basford's highly successful progress has to be admired and they are obviously very hardworking and ambitious, more than illustrated by the fact that Manager Martin Carruthers is under contract and employed on a full time basis, combine this with the fact that they have recently advertised for a full time Commercial Manager - we wish them every success on their football journey.

How did other League results have an effect on our own League position?

The Teams below us in in the League Table?

  • Gresley did not have a game and the Fixtures involving Romulus and Sheffield were postponed.

The Teams immediately above us in the League Table?

  • 10 Men Newcastle Town lost at Home 1-2 v Lincoln United in front of a crowd of only 87
  • Kidsgrove Athletic lost their Home Game 0-1 v Spalding United in front of a lowly crowd of 77.

Our next scheduled game is on Tuesday 20th March when we face a difficult road journey to play Sheffield FC - not the easiest of places to get to for a mid-week fixture.

Currently we have no game on Saturday 17th March, however given the spate of recent postponements this situation may perhaps change.
