1st Team 7 – 7 Ilkeston
It was an error strewn game with one converted try a piece late in the first half. Dan Hooton was the scorer for Matlock following a break by Tom Cruttenden. Unfortunately the score was negated by Ilkeston a few minutes later. The second half was disrupted by several injuries and some rather inclement weather.
Colts 7 – 7 Melbourne
The Colts also finished with a low scoring draw after a tough match against Melbourne.
Ladies 37 – 0 Belper
The Ladies had a great win against Belper, with their training over the summer evident. New girls Zoe, Ruby, Lorna and Sharon were superb. Matlock dominated up front and won loads of possession for the backs who ran in some excellent tries. Belper played really well with some good periods of play. Overall a great first performance of the season.
U14 27 – 5 Melbourne
Matlock U14’s travelled to Melbourne to face a strong well drilled side. The game kicked off with Melbourne camped firmly in the Matlock 22, but hard tackling and rucking halted their progress until the ball was shipped out to their speedy winger who touched down for the first score. Such is the determination within our team the boys came back with more purpose, ruling the scrum, lineouts, and breakdown. It didn’t take long until our power was reflected on the scoreboard with Henry Frost scoring and Harry Siddall getting the conversion.
Further pressure and strong scrummaging put Melbourne on the back foot allowing man of the match Jack O’Toole to score a superb try on his debut and as captain. Further tries from Jacques Eyre from the back of the scrum and a 5 yard dart over the line, and Henry Frost secured a 27-5 win for Matlock.
The rest of the Juniors had some great training sessions. The season is looking very positive for the U9s who had a huge turnout, U10s focussed on rucks and then put the training into practice with a game at the end. The U8s worked on drawing the defender, passing, and catching. Great work everyone!
