U12s too strong for Poynton & Rochdale

By

.... and a great referee debut from Andy Liles!

It was an early start on a blustery Saturday morning for the few brave souls heading around the M60 to sunny Rochdale but good news on arrival as the bacon and sausage butty window was already open and at £1.50 the quality was irrelevant.

After last week’s close defeat at home to Timperley, Mellor boys needed to bounce back in style and what unfolded in the wind and rain at Rochdale didn’t disappoint.

Virgin ref Andy Liles looked resplendent in his new uniform and blew his whistle magnificently whilst the injured Finn led the support from the touchline.

Despite losing the first face off Mellor defended well against strong early Poydale pressure and were rewarded with the first goal of the match from Eddie following a fantastic long pass by James S.
A further 4 goals followed in the 1st quarter from Miles P (2), Ellis & Miles Q with James K also hitting the post, however good defending from Captain Robbie, James S and Oli plus good passing from Seb kept Poydale goalless with Mellor going into the first break 5-0 up despite some good play from Poydale particularly from their No 16.

The 2nd quarter started well with Eddie hitting the post followed by goals from Charlie, Ellis & Miles P before Poydale scored followed by both Miles P & Q hitting the post before Charlie assisted Miles Q to make it 9-1 at half time.

The score was consolidated in the 3rd quarter with a further 3 goals by Mellor in the rain by Ellis, James K & Sam. Eddie also had a good effort saved and Theo defended well with some great pick-ups and runs, while Robbie sat on one of Poydale’s attackers!

The last quarter led to 5 more Mellor goals 4 of them assisted by James K the other by Ellis.
These goals included the first ever goals by Seb - a superb hat-trick!!! Plus a great goal for Theo following a close effort and a 2nd for Charlie.
Final score of 17-1 sounds very one sided but Poydale played their part and a couple of good saves by Fredrick prevented Poydale closing the gap on Mellor.
