Great 4th Quarter sees Mellor edge a great game against a great Cheadle side

A beautiful sunny day in Mellor helped raise the spirits following our first defeat of the season the previous week. A great season so far for Mellor but could the boys continue to perform well and quickly get back to winning ways against a strong looking Cheadle / Sheffield merged squad?
The first quarter didn’t go so well with Cheadle looking confident and scoring 5. A goal from George and one from Josh helped keep Mellor in it and the quarter ended with Cheadle 5,2 up.
Not sure what the coaches said to the Mellor boys at quarter time but they came out fighting and the defence didn’t let Cheadle anywhere near the goal in the second quarter. Maybe some of the tactics taught by Chris Simms earlier in the week helped and great defending led to opportunities in attack resulting in a super goal from George with a great assist by Jamie and a further goal by Josh. The quarter ended Mellor 4 Cheadle 5, game on!
With the sun in Neds eyes the third quarter didn’t go so well and Cheadle started to ramp up the pressure again scoring 3. Mellor picked up a couple of goals to keep us in the game but it wasn’t looking too good as we went into the final quarter trailing 6 goals to 8.
A rousing team talk by the coaches saw Mellor come out looking confident and a quick goal from George set the tone. Our defence continued to block any attempt by Cheadle and they continued to regain control and get the ball quickly up the field leading to a great run by Oli who finished with a magnificent goal. With Cheadle now on the back foot the Mellor boys played the advantage and came out of the sun like spitfires in a dog fight to take the lead and go two goals in front thanks to brilliant goals from Jamie, George and Oli. Cheadle got a further consolation goal but 5 goals for Mellor in this quarter and it was all over making it 7 games out of 8 so far this year.
Cheadle made them work for it (the bruises displayed by most boys the following day was testament to that) but a well-deserved win and a great game to watch with good skills and good sportsmanship demonstrated by both teams!
