5th January Rugby Chatter

Who, Where & When.

5th January
Northwich 1XV commence 2019 only 2 points short of a promotion play-off spot. And have 3 home fixtures during January. 2XV & 3XV both comfortable in mid-table positions, with a little more effort & commitment are 3 promotions attainable?

Did you know? 5th January 1933 work began on building the Golden Gate Bridge & on a strange twist of fate on the same day in 1982 a landslide killing 33 people caused the temporary closing of the iconic structure.

Northwich welcome Birkenhead Park to Moss Farm 2.15pm kick-off.
In the last game of 2018 Warrington achieved a double over Northwich, in a convincing display of utilising the elements and playing the referees decisions. Birkenhead won 35-34 in the team’s previous meeting, a game of twists & turns Northwich scoring a try in the final minute, the conversion missed & BP kicking the ball dead to secure the victory.

In their last outing BP hosted Firwood Waterloo. The conditions could not have been worse, driving wind and rain blowing in from the Mersey turning this game into a lottery which could have gone either way. Due to the direction of the elements down the pitch it was very much a game of two halves with Firwood taking advantage in the first 40 but, failing to take a number of chances on offer, left the 'door open' for the home side to do just enough to take the honours.

With BP claiming a double over Firwood, Northwich will be hoping it’s not a case of déjà vu this Saturday.

Looking forward to 2019 Postie said: “Nothing warms the soul more than winning and we’ll play every game with the intention of doing exactly that.”

Northwich 2 in 7th travel to Liverpool Collegiate in 9th. Northwich having no games since losing to Whitchurch on the 8th December. Collegiate losing their final fixture of 2018 at Chester 18-10. Northwich recording the better points difference between the teams although Collegiate have won more games. The league positions would be reversed but for Collegiate -10 for league infractions.

Northwich 3 are also on the road visiting 3rd placed Leek. In their earlier meeting Northwich were cruising 19-7 before switching off thinking job done, then Leek ran in 5 quick tries before Northwich responded in the final 10 minutes Leek eventually winning 26-38.

Northwich Colts have a Sunday fixture arranged away at Colne 2pm kick-off. Colne sitting bottom of the league. Even after restructuring the leagues due to team withdrawals fixtures are still difficult to fulfil, Northwich had 18 players available pre-Christmas but Broughton Park could not raise a squad to travel. Colne have only fulfilled 4 fixtures losing all, Northwich played 6 won 3. Hopefully teams will reorganise for the second half of the season, allowing meaningful league fixtures prior to the cup competitions in March.
