With the clocks going forwards, bright Spring sunshine replaced the grey ice, rain and snow of previous weeks at Carrington Sports Grounds to the west of Manchester. The hosts for the day were Sale RUFC, regarded as one of the leading Mini & Junior rugby clubs in the northwest. With excellent pitches and facilities, the Northwich U11s were keen to continue their improving form.
It is often the case when playing against leading clubs that the core values of the game are often neglected in favour of chasing a clinical outright win. However it was pleasing to find that the hosts were intent to not only give the visitors a great morning of rugby, but play with the same ethos as the visitors, namely great sportsmanship and respect.
Having an hour's less sleep led to the visitors having a quiet start. Sale took advantage of the visitors narrow defence to send the ball out wide to score in the corners. With the visitors undeterred, they fought back with character and resolve to make their mark on the scoreboard. However over the course of the game, the home team minimised their mistakes to slowly stretch out a lead.
A fantastic morning of rugby was had by all. All parents, coaches and spectators commented on the good nature of the two teams and the never give up attitude showed by the visitors. It was agreed that the score line was not a true reflection of how close the game was, and the two teams will look forward to meeting again in the future.
