Seasiders land locked!

By

FC Clacton came to Plantation Park looking for a result to secure their place in the premier league as the season comes to a close, whilst the Planters were intent on continueing their current unbeaten run.

Having met at the end of March when Clacton got a hard fought draw at Rush Green Bowl, the travelling support who had been on the road for nearly 4 hours were confident they could get something from the game.

The game kicked off at 8pm with the boys playing some good football moving the ball well, Clacton relying on speed on the break. The Planters made the breakthrough their dominance deserved on 28 minutes when a good corner whipped in by Andrew Cusack was met in the box by Lee Mason who headed the ball home, his first goal for United 1 - 0 Planters.

The only real threat coming from Clacton was coming from long balls and huge throw-ins, this nearly paid off when a long throw was met in the box and prodded goalwards, a good block saw the ball come off of Ben Nowers post with the follow up being put over the bar.

On 41 minutes the boys put the game out of reach of the seasiders, when Gavin Lemmons neat ball over the top put Mathew Blake away who took the ball in his stride and beat the keeper with ease 2 - 0 United.

Clacton had a really good shout for a penalty before the half time whistle when the ball came off Tom Jeals arm, whilst the majority of the crowd and players saw it the ref saw nothing wrong. Half Time 2 - 0.

The second half started with much of the same coming from the yellows, neat football with Adam Bennett and Ben Jones being a constant threat down the flanks with Cooky and Blakey keeping Clacton hemmed in their own half.

On the hour Gavin Lemmon was replaced by Gary Gilmore. The only real opening in the second period when Blakey was put away by Paul Cook, under pressure Matt got a shot off which drew a good block by the keeper.

Haydn Davis replaced Ben Jones on 85 minutes, job done. Haydn did have a chance for glory before the final whistle but his strike was high and wide, good to see he's got the confidence to have a go at this level it's an awful lot different to the under 18's.

The final whistle saw our 16th clean sheet in the league this season, 15th from Ben Nower and our 11th game unbeaten in this current run.

Saturday sees the boys home to the Jockeys from Newmarket which won't be an easy one. The game scheduled for Monday away at Mildenhall has been re-arranged and will now be on tuesday with a 7.45 kick off.

United: Nower, Speller, Cusack, Lemmon(Gilmore 60), Shipley, Jeal, Jones (Davis 85), Mason, Cook, Blake, Bennett. Unused subs Britcher, Eastaugh.

Andrew Eastaugh had an injury, Jamie George also picked up an injury Saturday, Scott Woodgate lost his sausage Saturday!!

League news, Brightlingsea had a good result against Godmanchester on Tuesday night, leaving four teams fighting for the league title, the tightest end to the season for many years, we will still potentially have a big say in the outcome, as following Easter we've got Felixstowe at Plantation Park with our last game of the season away at Brightlingsea on the 3rd of May.
