Comrie v Oban 26/08/12

By Ronnie Kelly

Oban suffer 2nd defeat of the season

Argyll league champions Oban suffered only their 2nd defeat of the 2012 season when they lost by 5 wickets to Perthshire side, Comrie on Sunday 26th August.

Comrie, on their own pitch, are a difficult side to beat with a side full of ex Perth league players and a wicket that is slow and makes batsmen work for every run.

Oban batted first and Kenny MacKenzie with 19 and Allan Laycock with 30 had them handily placed at 50 for 2. However, a stunning catch on the boundary dismissed Laycock and after that the Oban innings stalled and wickets started to fall regularly.Ronnie Kelly tried to steady the ship but he was last out, run out for 11 as Oban were all out for 76.

In reply, Andrew Leach and Allan Laycock made early inroads into the Comrie batting, reducing them at one stage to 25 for 4. However, a determined and patient partnership of 40 between Jones and McDonald of Comrie took them within sight of victory. Oban's bowling and fielding were commendable throughout and Daniel Booker bowled a fine spell of 5 overs for 7 runs in his first game for the Oban club.

Andrew Leach returned to the attack to dismiss Jones just before the end but Comrie edged home, passing the winning target of 77 with 5 wickets down.

Oban welcome Morton Cricket Club from Edinburgh to Taynuilt next Saturday 1st September.
