Leach Sucks the Life Out of Sannox

By Oban CC

Sannox CC from the Isle of Arran were the visitors at Taynuilt for the latest Argyll Cricket League fixture.

Reigning champions Oban dominated throughout and won by a mammoth 253 runs.

Oban Captain Davy Hannah won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket which was immaculately prepared by groundsman Neill Belshaw. Andrew Leach and Mal Mackenzie co-operated to set a record opening-partnership of 149. Umpire Terry Just signalled a seemingly endless number of boundaries as the wayward Sannox attack was dispatched to all corners. Mackenzie was eventually bowled by McMullen for 56 but this proved to be a poisoned chalice for the Arran men as Allan Laycock took to the middle. Laycock and Leach were pleasing on the eye, smashing a succession of fours and sixes as they pushed the total past 200 in the 27th over. Laycock was out for 58 from 25 balls and Leach fell agonisingly short of his century when he was caught in the covers while on 97. His tremendous innings included 15 fours and a six and this enabled the middle order to free their shoulders and take some risks. Campbell, Kelly, Carre and Kenny Mackenzie continued the onslaught to leave Oban at 300 for 8 after 40 overs. It was a particularly bad day at the office for Eric Dunn who finished with bowling figures of no wickets for 106 from his 8 overs.

Chasing the biggest-ever total posted by Oban was never going to be easy and this proved true as Sannox lost Dunn, bowled by Leach, in the first over. Duncan Campbell bowled an unplayable spell where he accounted for Pomeroy and Marriott. Ashforth and Clark, poached from the Oban ranks earlier, impressed with the bat to keep-out Kahn and Laycock. Kemp was all mouth and no trousers as he struggled against man of the match Leach. With one eye on the last ferry home and the other on the writing on the wall, Sannox forfeited the match at 47 for 6.

Oban are next in league action in two weeks' time with a trip to Kintyre to play Carradale.
