Old Brentwoods U12s suffered their first defeat of the season to Romford this weekend, losing by 3 tries to 1.

Romford, as expected, brought a large physical team, so the Acorns found themselves in familiar territory, playing against a bigger side. A disparity in size hasn’t caused the Acorns problems in other games, but on this occasion, various factors intervened to conspire against the U12s, and exacerbate the difference in size.

It was remarkable that a game was able to take place at all, given the amount of standing water around the pitch, and bog like conditions on it. The dimensions were narrowed because one side of the pitch was unplayable.

Nathan managed to run onto Frankie’s chip behind the Romford defence to open the scoring. However, the OBs would not cross the line for the rest of the match. On the day Romford did a better job of drawing in the defence and passing. Two of their three tries coming after several phases, and multiple passes. On the day, they were the better team.

OBs resolve to was not dampened despite trailing 2 scores and they played their hearts. The OBs tackling even drew applause from the opposition parents, such was its ferocity. However passion can only take you so far and the boys must now reflect on how they can improve their game play. The U12s are more than capable of moving the ball through the hands, and they will learn from this game.
