Colts clinch the league title at Kenilworth

By

OLs Colts clinch the Warwickshire Colts league title and make it the double with a tough physical close encounter against a rejuvenated Kenilworth side

A tense evenings rugby was played out at Kenilworth RFC 's 'cow patch' or 'cabbage patch' (depends on your age !) . The home team put out their strongest outfit in a bid to thwart their local rivals and deprive OLs of the title . Head coach Davies was not his usual ebullient self as he paced the touchline like a pensive first time father - coaches Craig and Edwards were also showing signs of nerves as were the numerous OLs travelling support .
An early injury to the Ks fullback put the game on hold right from the kick off at first breakdown but it was OLs who succumbed to the first loss with Ollie Craig having to come off 10 mins into the game with a leg injury . Kenilworth were awarded a penalty early on , 40 yards out and were first on the scoreboard , 3-0 as the kick was good . Both teams were up for this game and as a result there were many handling errors and many penalties as both sides infringed . Whilst Kenilworth had the best of the first quarter it was OLs who then started to retain more possession and go through the phases eventually resulting in a Josh Partridge try following some excellent pick and go work from the forwards, with conversion added by Will Davies. OLs , who early on looked to be going backwards in the scrum , were now in charge at scrum time as the Kenilworth props were penalised several times for 'boring' in . Just before the half time whistle the referee awards OLs with a difficult chance 35 yards out on the angle - Will Davies steps up and slots the ball straight between the posts . OLs take a 10-3 lean into the second half .
A superb take from Archie Semple from the kick off gets the second half underway . Kenilworth lose their fly half to injury and re-shuffle the back line - they are still very much in the game and always look a threat . The game becomes pretty scrappy for periods as both sides desperately want to win . The key moment of the game comes half way through the second half when OLs defend their 10m line as phase after phase comes from the rampant Kenilworth forwards , but after what seems an age to the away support Kenilworth come away empty handed and OLs clear their lines . This is a credit to the whole team as they have done this in numerous games this season , just a sheer will and determination not to have their line crossed . Shortly afterwards Callum Semple and Alex Witchell both go close to scoring . OLs win the battle for territory over the next quarter until the final whistle goes and the celebrations begin .10-3 , The double is done and cheered on by the vociferous OLs entourage . Bloody brilliant ..........
