Old Newton United Reserves v Bures United (First)

By Philip Piper

Home defeat for the Reserves

Saturdays cup game against current holders Bures United ended in defeat for Old Newton. Having taken the lead midway through the first half with a goal from Ben English Newton were sitting comfortably until in the 44th minute a defensive error allowed the Bures striker to poke a toe out and put the ball in the back of the net.

The second half was a topical cup game with both teams having chances but not taking them. As the game went on Bures looked a lot fitter than us and more dangerous in front of goal and in last 10 minutes they really got on top. With what seemed like penalties on the cards a number of changes were made for Newton which did upset the follow for Bures United but with a freekick deep in the Newton half in the dying seconds (94 minute) of the game a fine cross was put into the box and unfortunately for Jordan who had been solid in defense all game was caught the wrong side of his man who headed home for Bures to put them in the next round.

A battling performance from the reserves against a hard working side that will no doubt do while again in the cup, we wish them all the best in the next round.

This week sees the reserves in cup action this time against Bacton United Reserves.
