Ollerton Pay The Price For Missed Chances

By

Ollerton slip to Rossington defeat despite strong display.

Going into their game against Rossington Main on Saturday afternoon, Ollerton Town had managed to find the back of the net in each of their eleven games so far this season. After the final whistle had blown on their 2-0 defeat, Dave Winter's men were left scratching their heads as to how they hadn't managed to continue that run in a game in which they at least deserved a point from.

In the end, two goals in six minutes just after the half hour mark won Rossington the game and, clearly buoyed by the recent arrival of new manager Ryan Hindley, the visitors taught Ollerton a lesson in being clinical in front of goal.

They should have been ahead inside the opening few minutes however. Jordan Turner, a recent addition at Rossington, raced clear of the Ollerton back line but fired against the post when one-on-one with 'keeper Phil McGann.

At the other end, Liam Cooper had Ollerton's first real chance of the game, directing a header wide of the far post against his former club.

Veteran Lee Holmes was next to try his luck for Rossington but he was denied by McGann who did well to tip a powerful drive around the post.

Ollerton then missed the first of their guilt-edge chances as they went searching for an opener. Lewis Bingham did brilliantly to skip down the left and from the byline, he pulled the ball back for Sean Dickinson who smashed the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

The Ollerton chances kept coming and top 'scorer Gav King headed against the bar from a Bingham corner before the ball fell for Ben Bowring who saw his hooked effort tipped over the bar by Callum Fielding.

In the 33rd minute, Rossington were awarded a penalty against the run of play. Jordan Turner was brought down just inside the Ollerton area and Holmes stepped up to send McGann the wrong way from twelve yards to give the visitors the lead.

Six minutes later, it was 2-0. Cooper's mistimed header rolled kindly through for Jason Stokes and he thumped a shot past McGann despite the Ollerton stopper getting a hand to the effort.

Things almost got worst for Ollerton just before the interval as Holmes went through on goal and unselfishly squared it for Turner who failed to find the back of the net from close range.

Despite being down at half time, Ollerton were not out and knew that getting a goal back early in the second period would give them momentum.

They almost got it through Gav King. Bingham was able to cleverly head the ball down into the path of the marksman but, faced with just Fielding between him and the goal, King couldn't really get the ball out of his feet and his tame effort was saved low down.

King was in the thick of the action and when Ollerton were awarded a dangerous-looking free kick on the edge of the area, he stepped up to take it but could only fire into the wall. He then picked up the rebound and lashed an effort towards goal but it flew just past the upright.

Ollerton still had belief that they could get back into the game but they were running out of time and Bingham spurned another good opportunity when he was found free at the back post but skewed his first time volley off target.

Liam Cooper had another opportunity to score against his old side but from an Antony Rowley corner, he once again headed wide.

Ollerton were awarded another dangerous free kick in a similar position to King's previous effort. This time it was Bingham who took it but his effort was clawed away well by Fielding.

After striking the woodwork in the first half, Ollerton were denied by the crossbar once again. A clever ball over the top found Sean Dickinson free and he instinctively flicked the ball over Fielding and it appeared to be dropping into the net, only to strike the bar and bounce to safety.

In the dying embers of the game, Ollerton were still throwing everything they had at Rossington and they almost got what, given the time left, would probably have been a consolation goal. Bingham did fantastically well to hold off his man on the edge of the box and he went clear on goal but with only Fielding to beat, he smashed his effort off target.
