Luke Sharry Interview

By Neil Spofforth

Two thirty yard efforts at the weekend, one struck the post, the other the top corner. 'Shaz' is the man of the moment for Ossett Town.

Luke Sharry, Ossett Town’s 23 year old cultured midfielder joined the club at the end of 2012, making his debut in the Doodson League Cup here at Ingfield on 18 December, coming off the bench in a 3-1 won over Belper Town. Since then Shaz has established himself in the centre of Craig Elliott’s midfield making 43 appearances and finding the net on three occasions, the first of those in this fixture last season as the reds ran out winners by six goals to nil. But how did Luke get here..?

It all started out at Bradford City in the under 14's, he then worked his way up the ranks and was offered a two year youth apprenticeship under youth team manager John Pepper. “I received my first squad number at the age of 16 and another one the following year. After completing my two year apprenticeship I was then offered a two year professional contract with Bradford City under Stuart McCall.

In my first year I went on loan to Barrow AFC and played reserve football for Bradford. I worked hard and made my first team debut on the last game of the football season. In the second year of my pro contract I made a few appearances in the league and FA cup for Bradford City”.

In 2010/2011 Sharry moved to Guiseley and then Worksop Town the following year before moving to Garforth in November 2012. “It was a step down from full-time football, and somewhere I hope to get back to, but this level is still a good professional standard. After Garforth I moved here with Fernando Moke, I enjoy my time at Ossett Town, this season’s squad is stronger than last year and every player brings a different skill/attribute to the team”.

“My hopes for the season was for a good run in the FA Cup, which we had, we were so close to reaching the fourth qualifying round, and also do well and progress in the league and this can be done with hard work, sticking together as a team and also the support from the fans which this season has been superb. It makes a huge difference to hear the youngsters singing songs and cheering us on”.
