Match Preview: Ossett Town v Prescot Cables

Coming into the weekends fixtures, Tyrone Gay, voted into the NPL First Division North Team of the Year, is part of one of the best defences in the league and with 16, no side has as many clean sheets as Town.

Gay says “the clean sheets are extremely satisfying, I have scored a few goals this year but keeping so many clean sheets is a proud achievement”

The most recent of those shut outs was last Saturday as Ossett Town climbed back into the final play-off spot thanks to a 5-0 away victory at Ramsbottom United. Heading into the game Ramsbottom, 15th in the league and safe from relegation had been on a poor run of form collecting two points from their previous six games.

Gay says “As the end of the season approaches, sometimes teams with nothing to play for tend to go through the motions. This was one of them games. However, we can only beat what is in front of us and it has helped improve our goal difference too”.

It will be different this weekend as Ossett Town’s penultimate home game is against Prescot Cables, thanks to three consecutive victories they are now safe from the drop. While Ossett Town were beating Ramsbottom, Prescot did Town’s play-off hopes the power of good as they beat Glossop North End 7-2 before ensuring their safety by beating title chaser Lancaster City 2-0.

Despite the confidence running through the Ingfield based side Gay won’t be taking Prescot lightly. “Seeing their result certainly sharpens the mind. They will be hoping to give their fans another good performance before the season finishes so we will need to be aware of that.”

“They beat us 2-0 at their place on the opening day of the season, and it is a game we remember well. We created a lot of chances but couldn’t force the ball home, their opening goal was a suspect penalty, Liam Gaughan didn’t touch the lad who went down but regardless of that the referee made his decision and won’t have made the error intentionally”.

Grant Black says it is one game at a time and this week they will be training hard, “we know Prescot are a dangerous side, despite their league position as Glossop and Lancaster have seen this week. We will be working hard and looking for three points to keep us in the chase”.

“Sam Wright broke down a few weeks ago but will hopefully be training this week, Jake Ellam is available for selection, the only other doubt is Steve Ridley who was forced off with a hamstring injury last week so it touch and go for the weekend”
