Captain Peterson sinks the Vikings

Goole AFC 0 Ossett Town 3

The Reds travelled to the Victoria Pleasure Ground to face Goole AFC on the back of 3 straight wins and a 100% away record.

Goole have had a difficult start to the season with 6 defeats going into this game, however the Reds were on a good run last season when the Vikings, against the form book surprised everyone by winning 2-0 at Ingfield.

Grant Black selected an unchanged team from last weeks away victory at Atherton Collieries, starting with the same formation of 3-5-2.

Grant Black earlier in the week captured the signature of ex Barnsley FC player Matty Templeton from Shaw Lane FC, Matty will be a valuable addition to the squad and starts on the bench for tonight's game.

A decent crowd watched as the Reds kicked off, the 1st chance of the game falling to Alex Peterson who nearly opened the scoring with his header going just wide of the post.

It was Peterson again in the 12th minute who spotted the Goole keeper stood on the edge of his area and he lit the stadium up with a sensational volley from 45 yards which flew over the stranded keeper into the top of the net to put the Reds into a 1-0 lead.

Goole were creating a few half chances but nothing that really troubled Leigh Overton in goal.

Ossett looked as though they would increase their lead when Kai Hancock broke through the Goole defence with only the keeper to beat. Hancock attempted to take the ball round the keeper who at full stretch managed to rob the ball off the feet of Hancock to deny him an open net.

Ossett definitely looked the stronger side with Gregory, Ridley & Pembleton controlling the midfield action & Peterson & Hancock worrying the home defence with their join up play.

The Reds pressure paid dividends in the 36th minute when Martin Pembleton unleashed a fierce shot from 25 yards which beat the keeper but rattled the crossbar. As the ball came back into play off the bar, diminutive striker Kai Hancock was there to volley the ball over the keeper into the net to get his 4th goal of the season and to increase the Reds lead to 2-0.

The half time whistle blew with Ossett Town taking a 2-0 lead into the dressing room.

As the 2nd half got under way, the influential Steve Ridley was forced to retire with a back injury and was replaced in midfield by Sam Wright.

In the 51st minute a defensive clearance found Kai Hancock unmarked 35 yards out, he picked out Ash Jackson in the left wing with a superb diagonal pass. Jackson drove down the wing and pulled back a cross just inside the box where Alex Peterson was on hand to half volley the ball into the net for his second goal of the game and to take the score to 3-0.

In the 65th minute some great interplay between Pembleton and Wright on the edge of the Goole penalty area culminated in a slick passing move which saw Sam Wright through on goal and as he was about to shoot from 10 yards out, he was fouled. The Referee immediately awarded a penalty to Ossett. Then after strong protests from the Goole players, he changed his mind, one of the strangest things I've ever seen in football.

Ossett made two more substitutions with Matty Templeton replacing Ash Jackson and Seon Ripley coming on for Kai Hancock.

The whistle blew for full time with the Reds running out comfortable 3-0 winners to take them to 4 wins on the trot and unbeaten on the road so far this season.

The Reds next fixture is a massive game at home to Atherton Colleries in the FA Cup on Saturday 16th September when Grant Black will be demanding more of the same from the squad, Kick off 3pm.
