Percy Main v Birtley Town, Monday April 30th'18

By Norman de Bruin

A busy week ahead, but first up.....

Tomorrow night (Monday) Percy Main will face one of our biggest tests of the season when league championship and Northern league promotion hopefuls, Birtley Town, provide the opposition. Hopefully everybody can successfully and safely negotiate the tea time rush hour traffic in time, kick off is 6:30pm.

Birtley have floodlights at their ground and so have been able to stage their evening games at a bit later time which gives everyone (especially the opposition) a much better chance to actually get to the game on time, sadly at Purvis Park, we have no such luxury and so must all rush on pain of death, from work and elsewhere. One day maybe, but I think at the moment, that's well and truly way down on the 'to do' list.

Today's visitors, now under the stewardship of Paul Beat, have been there or thereabouts at the top of the table for most of the season and it's surely going to be either them or Newcastle University for the title. Both have applied for promotion and while the Uni's new ground is yet to be completed, Birtley's ground should already satisfy Northern league membership criteria, without problem.

Birtley won our corresponding league game by a narrow 2-1 margin on September 23rd at The Town Ground, but were made to work hard for their victory. Andy Hall netted both counters for Birtley either side of the interval, while Jake Forster's first half equaliser for Percy Main was to prove nothing more than a consolation.
