Percy Main had hoped to end their season on a winning note, but it wasn't to be as North Shields Athletic produced a superb first half performance to effectively seal the game with a 3-0 lead at the interval, thanks mainly to the endeavours of front runner Scott Jasper. The Main rallied after the break and created a series of chances which went largely unrewarded as top scorer Paul Collinson uncharacteristically missed a raft of decent goalscoring opportunities, which could've perhaps at least levelled matters.
There is no doubt that the visitors were by far the better side during the opening 46 minutes and certainly deserved their lead. After Kyle Capuso had scooped the ball over the bar during the first minute, Jasper beat the offside trap to put the visitors ahead only 5 minutes in. There were claims for offiside within the home defence, but the goal was allowed to stand.
As Percy Main created little, Jasper netted his side's second on 38 minutes- how second bottom North Shields could've done with him on a more regular basis during the past campaign, as their side have struggled among the lower reaches of the table throughout the season and he was denied his hat trick a couple of minutes later by home keeper Craig Byrne, but as the half came to a close, Jasper turned provider as he touched on to Capuso who fired home Athletic's third.
Percy Main hit back after the interval and it was a great ball from defence by Robert Hamilton who found Jake Forster and the midfielder made no mistake to lessen the deficit.
Jonny Lowes had a close range effort thwarted by Byrne, while at the other end Collinson's header was saved by Michael Tatum and Forster tested the visitors custodian. Collinson then fired just over from Ryan Richardson's flick, but North Shields restored their 3 goal advantage on 75 minutes as Byrne was adjudged to have upended Jasper in the area and former Main man Ryan McKee fired home the resultant penalty, only just though as Byrne got his hand to it.
Collinson played in by Forster spurned another good chance, before Hamilton cleared Jasper's effort from the line, but The Main gained a second consolation as Forster's corner was converted by Hamilton.....
And that was it, the end of what has seemed an awfully long season. No more league football until August, but watch this space for what could be an eventful summer.....
