Mike Blair flying the Falcons nest

By John Chappell

Ex Scottish captain and British & Irish Lion, Mike Blair, is heading to Glasgow. His article in saturdays Journal was complimentary about Ponteland

His article finished with...
" For Blair his departure from the Falcons also means the end of a successful coaching stint down the local league ladder, having helped Ponteland RFC to a league and cup double.
Under coach Tom Bramald, he and fellow Falcon Ally Hogg have resurrected the fortunes of the relegated outfit, bouncing staight back.
Blair said " We were Durham & Northumberland two champions and also went on to win the Northumberland County Plate final.
It was great fun and has gone really well. The main reason for starting it was down to doing my level three coaching badge, but I have enjoyed doing it immensely. They are a great bunch of guys and it is difficult to step aside when you have helped coach a winning team.
Hopefully they will do well next year in Durham and Northumberland one, which is a much tougher league. Apparently there is quite a big gulf between the two in terms of the size of the forward packs. We are not a particularly big team but the strength of our set piece has been one of our strengths this season, whereas last year it was a weakness.
Whether or not is the case next season we will just have to wait and see, but it was really good fun and a privilege to be involved with such a great club as Ponteland"
