Pulborough Girls represent England in Under 18's 7's Home Nations

By Michael Fisher

Congratulations to Flo Robinson and Lauren Fisher who represented England under 18's at the Home Nations in Birmingham over the weekend.

Both Flo and Lauren were selected in a squad of 12 to take on the other Home nations in a 7's tournament.

After a round robin competition on Saturday played Wales in their Semi with both Girls involved in most of the game. After drawing with Wales on Saturday it was going to be a tough encounter however England found another gear and were worthy winners 26 v 5.

This pitted them against Ireland in the final who had beaten England well on the Saturday.

It appeared it was going to be very much the same at Ireland scored 2 breakaway tries where better tackling would have stopped. Lesson learnt we would hope but unfortunately not, and Ireland scored at again their 3rd break away try and clearly had targeted the same expected gaps in the defence. 19 v 0 down and England needed to dig deep and show some character.

They bounced back before half time with a fantastic team effort and this made it 19 v 7 at half time. England made a couple of changes at half time to shore up the defence and in the 2nd half the Irish were on the back foot.
Another excellent team score was followed by a solo effort and England were right back in it at 19 v 19.

With 2 minutes to go England had a line out on the 10 metre line and Flo collected from the line out and went blindside to go over the line. Or so we thought! The linesman called play back as a foot had 'touched' the line. Close call it had to be said since watching it was felt a harsh call.

However games at yet won on small margins and from the next play Ireland broke out from their 22 on yet another break away try to score for the Irish.

Great experience for the girls and Pulborough are proud of you!
