Amesbury seal cup progression with final kick of the game

PURTON were eliminated from the Wiltshire Senior Cup after a tight match at the Red House against Amesbury Town, who play two levels higher in the football pyramid.

The visitors started well with a lot of possession in the opening half-hour but Purton's middle three soaked up the pressure with Andrew Bilko Purton's man of the match.

Purton went ahead after 35 minutes when Chris Avery slotted the ball past the Amesbury keeper from a tight angle.

Just before the break only a good save from Purton keeper Luke Kuczynski from an Amesbury free kick protected the lead.

The second half started with Purton continuing to play at a high tempo while restricting Amesbury from creating anything positive until the 65th minute when a Purton lapse in defence saw the visitors equalise.

Purton were denied a potential winner when, from a Joe Dorey corner, a header from skipper Steve Pleass was goalbound until striking a defender's hand – but no penalty was given.

In the next attack, with Purton were still mulling over the injustice, Amesbury grabbed the winner to progress to the next round.

While the Purton management team of Neil Lee and Liam Lewis were disappointed to lose, they were happy to have competed so well, especially with five players missing.
