Morris leads a merry dance!

By

Rainworth had scored 17 goals in their last three home matches so the expectations were high for the visit of Nostell Miners Welfare.

The weather conditions on the day were a great leveller with swirling wind and driving rain and both sides should be complimented for putting on an excellent game of football.

It had also been 294 minutes since Rainworth’s leading goalscorer Liam Morris had scored, a hat-trick against Liversedge.

At the final whistle Rainworth had added 6 more goals to their tally and Morris had scored 4 of them and assisted with another.

The game started with Rainworth kicking with the elements and they probably should have taken the lead in the opening minute when Declan Brewin found Matt Sykes but he hit his shot straight at the keeper.

Rainworth’s passing style created another opportunity in the 8th minute when Jack Barnett, Sykes and Connor Smythe combined down the left but Smythe’s cross was caught by the wind and Ed Hall gathered the ball.

The swirling wind and driving rain caused problems for both sides, who to their credit tried to play football.

Then in the 13th minute a through ball found Morris, twice before he had been caught offside, but on this occasion he beat the offside trap, made space and clinically finished for the opener.

It should have been two three minutes later when Sykes found York, only for him to hit his shot straight at the keeper. Moments later Morris found York on the right but his cross cum shot just went wide of the far post.

It looked as though Morris would get his second as Hall failed to gather Sykes shot but as he was about to tap it in the referee blew for offside.

Undaunted a minute later Morris’s goalbound shot was deflected for a corner. From the resultant corner Sykes found Jack Andrews and his powerful downward header bounced over the crossbar as a result of the slick surface, on another day it would have found the back of the net.

In the 25th minute Nostell had their first effort on goal when Simon Poole pulled his shot well wide.

Rainworth were a relieved team when after such dominance they scored their second as Morris headed in Sykes’s free kick.

From yet another Sykes free-kick Andrews headed against the post and it was cleared.

On 40 minutes York flashed his long range effort just past the upright as Rainworth pushed for more goals.

Nostell did test debutant keeper Chris Gill in the 41st minute as Sean Goodwin attempted a lob, but Gill was more than equal to it.

In the final minutes of the half Nostell made a concerted effort to pull one back but Rainworth held firm and as the whistle sounded they must have wondered why they only led by two goals.

Nostell were the first to threaten at the start of the second half with the elements in their favour. When a great run and shot was tipped around the post by Gill.

A couple of minutes later Brewin found Sykes and as he broke into the penalty area his run on goal was only ended when he was brought down at the expense of a penalty.

Morris stepped up and converted the penalty to complete his hat-trick, although Hall got a hand to it.

That was to signal a short period of Nostell pressure as firstly Gill tipped Matt Johnson’s goalbound effort over and then Morgan Jaslok put his effort over.

On 68 minutes Rainworth brought on Liam Theakstone for Brewin.

Shortly afterwards he set up York and he gave Hall no chance as he scored the fourth.

Theakstone should have got on the scoresheet a minute later as Morris put him through but his shot lacked power and Hall easily saved.

Rainworth brought on Lewis Bingham in place of York and shortly afterwards Rainworth got their fifth as Morris set up Sam Dockwray who put it past Hall into the far corner.

Rainworth brought on their final substitute as James Weaver replaced Barnett.

Weaver was soon in the action and after he had won the ball, Bingham set up Theakstone only for Hall to make an excellent save to prevent the sixth.

It was now all Rainworth as Theakstone set up Bingham, the shot beat Hall but came back off the inside of the upright.

Morris flashed an effort just wide and then he set up Sykes and only an excellent save at the expense of a corner prevented him scoring.

The restbite was short lived as in the final minute Bingham’s cross was met by the head of Morris for his fourth and Rainworth’s sixth, the whistle for full-time came to end Nostell’s torment.

A salient fact was that Rainworth had given debuts to four keepers in the course of the season and all had kept clean sheets.
